The IRC began working in Uganda in 1998 in response to the devastation wrought by rebel group the Lord’s Resistance Army in the north of the country. Today, the IRC is helping tens of thousands of people displaced by violence to return home and rebuild their communities, following a cease-fire agreement in 2006. At the same time, in Karamoja—one of the poorest and least developed areas in Uganda—the IRC works with communities affected by violence to promote peace and improve access to services. The IRC in Uganda recently began implementing a new five-year strategic plan that focuses on meeting the unique needs of adolescent girls, strengthening partnerships with the government, civil society and the private sector, promoting accountability and increasing the use of evidence-based approaches. In FY2010, the IRC had an annual program value of $7.7 million and employed approximately 180 staff in six locations.
