Health and Hygiene Promotion Co-ordinator at Medair in Sudan

Role and Responsibilities
Facilitate achievement of Health and Hygiene Promotion (HHP) objectives across Medair South Sudan (SDS) programmes. Assess and advise on response to HHP needs and encourage adoption of healthy practices and conditions that contribute to decreased morbidity and mortality in areas of implementation, as capacity permits.
Project Overview
To support multi-sectoral relief and rehabilitation projects in potentially insecure locations in South Sudan. This includes health, nutrition, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), and NFI projects.

Key activity areas
Technical
• Endeavour to provide excellent HHP that will result in changed health and hygiene behaviours and /or conditions for project catchment area.
• Review the methods used to deliver HHP messages through the health and WASH interventions.
• Support project managers and CLOs in deciding priorities for HHP interventions, campaigns and field visits, with an awareness of gender and HIV/AIDS as cross-cutting issues.
• Give input for monthly, quarterly and final reports for health, nutrition, NFI, and WASH projects.
• Give input to Medair South Sudan HHP guidelines in health, nutrition, NFI, and WASH locations.
• Facilitate response in appropriate HHP in specific emergency/outbreak situations.
• Give advice to the project managers and Medair staff on appropriate policies and procedures for programme implementation in the field, to assure sound application of community development approaches in Health and WASH programmes.
• Give technical and management advice to the project managers on achievement of all external and internal training objectives based on proposal logframe objectives and budgets.
• Provide advice to project managers on budgets for HHP lines in health, nutrition, NFI, and WASH programmes, according to donor proposals and regulations.
• Advise on health promotion part of field trip preparation and other aspects as requested.

Staff Coaching
• Provide HHP training and supervision to CLOs and affiliated staff where health, nutrition, NFI, and WASH programmes are supported.
• Train and assist other team members in HHP methodologies as requested.
• Advise on recruitment of new HHP staff.

Quality Management
• Contribute towards the highest quality standards feasible within the context of HHP in health, nutrition, NFI, and WASH programmes.

External Representation
• Represent Medair in relevant HHP meetings in South Sudan.
• Liaise with Public Health Office, local authorities, government ministries and other NGOs to coordinate and develop HHP programmes and to develop the capacity of local staff in health, nutrition, NFI, and WASH programmes.
Qualifications
• Nursing, public health, or teaching degree; Courses in health promotion
Experience / Competencies
• Experience in building capacity of local staff and doing HHP in a developing country
• One year’s experience working as a trainer / manager in a developing country desirable
• Understanding of Behaviour Change Communication methodology desirable
• Experience with HIV initiatives in a developing country desirable
• Coaching / teaching skills
• Passion for empowering individuals, able to motivate local community
• Empathy and ability to see issues from eyes of community
• Culturally aware, can easily adjust in different communities
• At ease in report writing
• Organized, initiative taker and self learner
• Planning and organizational skills
• Team player; ease in establishing relationships
• Flexible, able to work and live out of the bag in a changing environment
• Can cope with basic living conditions
• Personal awareness of own stress indicators

• Minimum three months of overseas intercultural experience
• Strong working knowledge of English (spoken and written)

• Successful completion of Medair Relief & Rehabilitation Orientation Course (ROC)

Working Conditions
• Mainly based in Juba, but will be working, living and travelling between the main locations of the South Sudan programme (Upper Nile and ERT project sites). Living conditions are basic.
