Medical Officer (Occupational Health and Environmental)

Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Medical Officer (Occupational Health and Environmental) will be responsible for the following duties: Obtain from UNHQ the guideline for Health and Safety matters; visit all MONUSCO main sectors and locations and assess the general health and safety situation of the Mission; Based on UNHQ guidelines and visits to the field, draft MONUSCO Health and Safety guidelines; Offer day-to-day advice on health and safety issues; carry out routine inspections of Mission sites and facilities and investigate complaints to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations; Prepare guidance material and instructions in such areas as office and other work area ergonomics, workplace related hazards, chemical safety, disease control measures from an environmental health point of view; Investigate complaints of unsafe workplaces and contingent quarters to identify areas of negligence within working areas and provide necessary recommendations; Ensure that premises where food and drinking water for staff consumption are produced, manufactured, processed, or stored and presented for sale meet required standards; if necessary, samples of unfit food or water could be taken through voluntary surrender, detention or seizure, to be tested at specialist laboratories for infectious disease or contamination. Provide guidance for safe disposal of medical and other wastes which could adversely affect staff health; provide guidance and supervise disinfection of Mission facilities and vehicles used in handling contagious cases. Liaise with the other Units in the Medical Section to investigate outbreak of disease within the Mission environment to identify causes, provide control measures for staff protection, and/or prevent recurrences; Evaluate in-house or contractor vector control remedies for environmental impact and ensure that they do not unnecessarily influence the ecological balance. Create an information forum for Mission staff on environmental health and safety issues to improve staff awareness and wellbeing staff to adopt helpful measures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in Occupational Safety and Health/Environmental Management. A first level degree in health sciences (medicine, veterinary medicine, environmental health science or related fields) with basic knowledge in occupational safety and health and relevant experience may be accepted.

Work Experience
At least 5 years progressive experience in occupational safety and health or environmental health, 3 of which should be at international level.

Languages
Excellent command of oral and written English and a good working knowledge of French or an excellent command of oral and written French and a good working knowledge of English.
